Dealing with a lot of change recently: loss of loved one & getting a new job. So I haven’t been reading or motivated to post. But I’m slowly getting back into things.
•
This little guy here is a new edition to my family. He and his sister were the cats of my family member who passed. We now have 5 cats wandering our house (though this guy & his sister are in one room as we make the transition to the whole house with the other kitties). The boy is adjusting pretty well, but the girl not as well. Either way they’re super sweet cats and I’m so fortunate we were able to take them & care for them. So even in grief there are moments of joy.

I hope the rest of 2020 fairs well for you all and that you find a slimmer of joy in your days, especially your hard days.

Displacement is a new graphic novel releasing tomorrow. It’s part historical fiction, part memoir with some magical realism thrown in. I really, really enjoyed this one. It gives an intimate look into the incarceration camps of Japanese Americans and how these camps had a generational affect. Kiki Hughes does a wonderful job pulling the reader into this experience. The story and illustrations are an incredible pairing that pulled everything together. This is very much a must read. See my full review (link in bio) for more info!

This book has a core message of kindness that I adored with the humor you can expect from Kinney. Loved this story within a story & all the fun characters. Will definitely have to read book one of this series too!

Really enjoyed this look into how Lois Lane got her interest in journalism. This graphic novel has bright & colorful images & distinct character personalities. It was a quick read with a modern storyline & a good representation of friendships during that age.

There’s been lots of chatter about the book influencer world on twitter & so I thought I’d share some thoughts.
.
I’ve been blogging off & on for 8 years now. My “peak” blogging & ‘gramming was probably 2015-2017. I’ve never been consistent or garnered a large following. I never made publisher contacts or gained physical ARCs outside of a giveaway or through work. I attended BEA once in 2015 because I had the means to buy a ticket & travel to NYC. I started my blog on the free Wordpress platform before I even had a smartphone. I chased the numbers — looking for the engagement & the follows on here & on my blog & YouTube. I thought I was doing everything right but growth never really happened for me & that chase of numbers kept adding pressure which is why I kept stepping away. Now that I stepped away for a full year, I’m no longer chasing the numbers & have found my way back to my original “why” - I blog & I ‘gram because I love books & reading. Books gave me an escape from loneliness, from bullies, & sometimes from myself. Just like with music, I slip into a different world & different feelings & that is everything to me. Anyway I can share that feeling with others, I will. So here I am back to blogging & back to the ‘gram on my own terms & without the pressure to “succeed.” Thank you all who have remained with me through all these 8 years (especially during my absent times) & thank you to any new friends who’ve popped into my journey recently. While I’m not always the best at connecting with others, I’m going to try better this time around. Just me, sharing the books I’m reading & loving with those who love books too!

“Let’s play ball!” ⚾️

Don’t judge a book by its cover 😉 This graphic novel is more than just baseball & zombies (both good stuff though). I loved the sister relationship focus, the humor, the zombie, the bit of magic thrown in and the overall themes of teamwork, friendship & family. It’s a well rounded story and I had fun jumping into this world & these characters! Worth picking up for a lighter read.

I’ve been toying with the idea for a couple of years and this year (during quarantine/state shut down) I decided to move a head with my wish to create a separate book blog dedicated to all my romance reads. I read A LOT of romance but I didn’t think those books really jived with my YA/MG focused blog (that also had some mystery & non fiction thrown in). So I made a “sub blog” on my existing domain & created: Seduced in the Stacks! I’ll be blogging all things romance there (& I mean ALL the Romance! Lol). So check out the link in my bio where you can find both my blogs!
.
This particular title is a modernization of Pride & Prejudice. It had some cute twists & steamy episodes, but in the end was just an okay read for me. It was a nice quick fix for my P&P fandom heart, but not a favorite.

I read this one back in March/April on a friend’s recommendation. I’ve posted up my thoughts from my book review journal up on the blog today. I’m hoping to blog a bit more after being on a huge hiatus. Of course, I’m also committing to reading more black authors & more diverse authors & stories. I’ve noticed that while I read diverse YA, I don’t read diverse romance books. I hadn’t even realized until I took these past few weeks to reflect, learn & unlearn. So I’m definitely changing that & commuting to being more aware of my reading habits. I already have some on my TBR, but if you have recs leave them below 👇🏻
